Flying Fish Café - Walt Disney World - Orlando, FL (1996)
“Flying Fish opened at the Disney’s BoardWalk, which is a multi-purpose hotel complex in Walt Disney World. The restaurant was named for a roller coaster car popular at Coney Island during the 1920’s. In the main dining area are two floor-to-ceiling structures modeled after the famous Parachute Jump ride at Coney Island. Suspended from the tops of the pylons are parachutes that
dangle gold-leafed pair of flying fishes. Martin Dorf of Dorf Associates Interior Design explains that the “parachutes” are illuminated by fiber optic acrylic lights. The color can be changed through controls on an illuminator box located within the pylons. The eyes are then led to the ceiling, painted to resemble blue sky, and the murals featuring “funhouse” attractions. A series of massive columns, covered with golden fish scales, were erected in the dining and bar areas. The fish scale design is also found on the hammered, stainless-steel bar and the mosaic tile floor. The seating areas are divided by railings to resemble the undulating tracks of the roller coaster ride.”

Apparently this Art Deco home was originally built for Walt Disney in the 1930s. Some time thereafter it was purchased by a different owner and re-styled in a French Country style. Luis remodeled the home to bring it back to the original Art Deco look, but with fantastical 1980s touches. The Egyptian Deco disco (image 1) is particularly exuberant.
